Type M / M′
One of Sunnyside Gardens’ rarest and most elaborate facade types, defined by an offset brick porch, projecting upper bay and sculptural parapet.
Form & composition
A Rare Facade Shaped By Brick And Projection.
Type M is an unusually elaborate four-bay house. Its first floor combines a single window, an offset enclosed brick entry porch and two more single windows. Upstairs, two single windows are joined by a projecting bay at one end of the facade.
Type M′ reverses the composition, moving the entry and upper bay to the opposite sides. The family is always flat-roofed and distinguished by some of the district’s most expressive parapet brickwork.

How to Recognize It
Read the porch, projecting upper bay and parapet together. Those three elements distinguish Type M even when windows or doors have been replaced.
Architectural character
What Makes It Distinctive
The porch historically carried a hipped slate roof, wood cornice and copper flashing. Above it, the parapet turns ordinary brick into ornament through corbels, faceted colonettes and a stepped profile over the projecting bay.
